Why Lenexa families add a shelter

Western Johnson County has taken its share of warnings over the years, and anyone who has stood in a hallway listening to the Lenexa sirens knows that is not a plan. The catch here is the growth. So much of the new Lenexa, the subdivisions out toward City Center and west past K-7 along Clare Road, was built fast on slab foundations with no basement. When a warning hits, those families have nowhere below grade to go. A rated safe room gives them one. It is the single thing that turns a scramble into a calm walk to a known spot in the house.
